Muni Earth Day

รูปภาพ
Muni Earth Day By Andrea Buffa Every day, we are confronted with the impacts of climate change: Fires, flooding, heat waves, poor air quality; threats to the health of human beings and the planet. It all can feel so overwhelming when considering what actions you can take that will actually make a big difference for Earth Day. But one of the easiest and most convenient ways that you can make Earth Day every day is to make more of your trips by Muni, walking or bicycling.   Making these efforts now truly will make a difference: Transportation is the largest source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in San Francisco—almost half of all GHG emissions. A whopping three-quarters of those emissions come from driving personal vehicles. While climate emissions from other sectors have declined significantly over the last 30 years (commercial building emissions declined 67% and residential building emissions by 57%), transportation emissions have been stubbornly hard to bring down. The...

Fix It! Week Closes Muni Metro Early Starting Thursday, April 14

Fix It! Week Closes Muni Metro Early Starting Thursday, April 14   By Jessie Liang Every night after Muni Metro subway service hours, SFMTA maintenance crews work to maintain the tracks and equipment underground. On most nights, this gives them only about two hours to get work done. To complete critical maintenance tasks that cannot be completed during normal windows, we are planning Fix It! Week from Thursday, April 14, through Sunday, April 24, so the crews have more hours each night to do this vital work.  During Fix It! Week, the subway between Embarcadero and West Portal will close early at 9:30 p.m. Buses will run above ground to connect all stops, beginning at 9:30 p.m. through the normal end of train service at 12 a.m. while the subway is closed for maintenance. Owl service will remain unchanged.  Trains will start regular morning service each day. To accommodate those attending NBA playoffs at Chase Center, subway service will remain in place on evenings...

Geary Boulevard Improvement Project Update

รูปภาพ
Geary Boulevard Improvement Project Update By Amy Fowler Geary Boulevard is a critical east-west arterial and one of the busiest bus corridors in North America, connecting downtown San Francisco to the Richmond District. The SFMTA has been busy working on the second phase of planned improvements on Geary, called the Geary Boulevard Improvement Project , to improve Muni’s 38 Geary bus service and address traffic safety between 34th Avenue and Stanyan Street.  The project is building on the success of the Geary Rapid Project , which was recently completed on time and on budget and has already shown promising travel time savings on the eastern half of the Geary corridor.    Last fall, we asked neighbors in the Richmond about their priorities for transit, safety and driving issues on Geary via pop-up events on the corridor and a Virtual Open House. Thanks to input from over 600 community members , the SFMTA has used this feedback to draft the detailed, block-by-bloc...

Grab a Cab and Support a Small Business

รูปภาพ
Grab a Cab and Support a Small Business By Pamela Johnson Taxi drivers are an integral part of what makes San Francisco unique and contribute to the city's economic vitality.  They are essential workers playing a vital role in our transportation network. Each driver works to move people safely and efficiently from one destination to another on their daily journey.  And, importantly, taxis are small businesses. Taxi drivers are trained and experienced professional drivers who obtain a permit to operate and pay taxes.   To promote taxi ridership in San Francisco, the SFMTA launched our Taxi Marketing Campaign on January 3, 2022. The campaign is based on input taxi drivers provided in discussions with the SFMTA and an initial campaign to test key marketing messages. The drivers talked and we listened --doing all we could to increase taxi ridership.   During the Covid-19 Pandemic, taxis got people to their healt...

The Infrastructure Bill and the SFMTA

The Infrastructure Bill and the SFMTA By What the infrastructure bill means for the SFMTA On December 20, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi joined Mayor London Breed and US Representative Mark DeSaulnier to promote the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act that was signed into law in November. They held an event at the corner of Second and Howard Streets to explain how the bill will benefit California and show the type of street improvements it can pay for to improve pedestrian safety. These include things like wider sidewalks, protected bike lanes, transit boarding islands and ADA-compliant curb ramps. It’s through these types of improvements that San Francisco will be able to reach its goal of eliminating traffic fatalities. The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC), which coordinates Bay Area transportation financing, estimates that the infrastructure bill will provide about $4.5 billion in funding to the region over the next five years via formula funds that the MTC a...

How we made San Francisco streets safer in 2021

รูปภาพ
How we made San Francisco streets safer in 2021 By Eillie Anzilotti How We Made San Francisco Streets Safer In 2021 As 2021 comes to an end, we're reflecting on everything SFMTA has done to make San Francisco streets safer for all. But first, let’s wind back 50 years ago to 1971: the year the first bike lanes went in in San Francisco! The city’s first bike lanes on Lake Street came out of a community effort to calm traffic and make the neighborhood safer. There’s an often-quoted expression that “change happens slowly, then all at once.” For San Francisco safe streets, 2021 is certainly in the “all at once” phase. Fifty years after the first bike lanes were installed in the city, we’re continuing to push the boundaries of what safe streets can look like in San Francisco. Here’s a look at some key progress from this past year: Transforming the Tenderloin: In a neighborhood where every street is on the city’s Vision Zero High-Injury Network, we implemented a suite of projects t...

Fulton Street Sees Transit and Safety Improvements

รูปภาพ
Fulton Street Sees Transit and Safety Improvements By Shalon Rogers A temporary transit bulb was recently installed at 8th Avenue and Fulton, reducing travel time for the 5 Fulton and 5R Fulton Rapid and making boarding safer. For those who ride the 5 Fulton or 5R Fulton Rapid in the Richmond District, you may have recently noticed something new about the bus stops on Fulton Street at 6th and 8th avenues. And perhaps you noticed that your bus ride seemed to go slightly faster or with less disruption. Two new temporary transit bulbs installed at 6th Avenue eastbound and 8th Avenue westbound bring safety and transit benefits to Fulton Street in advance of the planned construction of permanent bulbs and are part of the Fulton Street Safety and Transit Project . Six permanent transit bulbs between Arguello and 10th Avenue are ultimately planned, which will save time and improve reliability for riders on the 5 Fulton and 5R Fulton Rapid by reducing the time it takes for buses to pull...

Safer Intersections Project a Traffic Calming Success

รูปภาพ
Safer Intersections Project a Traffic Calming Success By Uyen Ngo This week the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) released “ A Turn Toward Safety: The Safer Intersections Project ,” a report detailing the impact of the Left Turn Traffic Calming Project and the “Safety—It’s Your Turn” education campaign. The Safer Intersections Project now has tested traffic interventions that can reduce unsafe left turns. Overall, SFMTA found a 17% reduction in average speed (1.7mph slower) and a 71% reduction in the likelihood of a car turning left at higher speeds over 15mph at seven high-crash test intersections. In 2019, 40% of traffic deaths in San Francisco were caused when drivers made left turns and didn’t see the person in the crosswalk, until it was too late. To combat this trend, also seen in other cities, and encourage safer left turns and adoption of safer left turn behaviors, San Francisco’s multilayered project combined engineering treatments in seven high-crash ...

รูปภาพ
4th and King Overhead Line Installation Starts November 17, 2021 By Enrique Aguilar Heads up! Installation of overhead line equipment at 4th and King streets starts Nov. 17. Consider taking an alternative route if driving through the area as work for the Central Subway will require detouring traffic. N Judah and T Third rail service will be served by buses starting at approximately 9 p.m. each night that work is performed. Crews are scheduled to work during nighttime to reduce traffic and Muni service disruption while overhead lines and accessories are installed that will tie the new Central Subway system to the existing T Third Street line. A test train will verify Overhead Catenary System (OCS) installation, which is how zero-emissions electrical power is supplied to light rail vehicles. Electrical work will start at approximately 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 17, and should conclude Saturday, Nov. 20. Rail service will resume on schedule Thursday and Friday mornings. Saturday and Su...

Animated Map Shows Record Expansion of Transit Lanes

รูปภาพ
Animated Map Shows Record Expansion of Transit Lanes By Michael Rhodes An animated map showing the expansion of transit lanes in San Francisco. View as a PDF . It’s been a record year for transit lanes in San Francisco: we’ve installed nearly 14 miles of new or upgraded lanes since summer 2020. That’s the fastest expansion of transit lanes in the city’s history. These transit lanes benefit Muni routes that serve nearly two-thirds of current customers. It’s all part of our efforts to give transit riders priority on congested streets and improve Muni speed and reliability. Better Muni service means more people will opt to take transit instead of driving, that reduces congestion and supports our environmental goals . To commemorate this milestone, we’ve put together an animated map showing the evolution of San Francisco’s transit lane network over the last 15 years. We hope you find it as mesmerizing as we do to watch transit lanes expand across the city during this time. Transit l...

J Church Pilot Eases Subway Congestion for Muni Metro

รูปภาพ
J Church Pilot Eases Subway Congestion for Muni Metro By Jonathan Streeter In December 2020, the J Church returned as a surface-only route, much like its earliest predecessor, which opened in 1917.  Although the J Church travelled as far as the Embarcadero for more than 100 years, establishing Duboce Avenue as the terminal for this route as a test case was the result of careful analysis undertaken to improve the line’s poor reliability. This routing also allows us to address crowding and delays in the Muni Metro subway that plagued the system for decades. The J Church in 1926 Surface Route The J Church has historically had the lowest ridership of any Muni Metro line. Keeping it as a surface-only route should improve the J Church’s reliability and frequency, increase Muni Metro subway performance and reduce crowding. In addition, to enable the pilot we provided temporary accessibility and pedestrian safety upgrades at an intersection that is on the city’s High-Injury Network -...

Essential Trip Card Program Provides Crucial Accommodations

รูปภาพ
Essential Trip Card Program Provides Crucial Accommodations By Stephen Chun During a time of unprecedented uncertainty, we reflect on a very successful 18 months since the launch of our Essential Trip Card (ETC) program.  The ETC is administered through the SFMTA’s Paratransit program (SF Paratransit) which has provided door to door van and taxi (paratransit) services for more than 40 years to people who are unable to independently use Muni, for some, all the time, because of a disability or disabling health condition.   In response to the Muni service reductions in April 2020, the ETC program was launched to provide seniors and persons with disabilities with safe and door-to-door taxi service to essential services during the pandemic as a supplement to the existing Muni service. Such essential trips include grocery shopping, pharmacy visits, medical treatments, and later, vaccination appointments. Once enrolled, ETC participants receive a monthly taxi subsidy of $60 (fo...

Bikeshare Station Expansion and e-Bike Price Changes

รูปภาพ
Bikeshare Station Expansion and e-Bike Price Changes By Adrian Leung As San Francisco's Bikeshare program administrator , the SFMTA recently approved a price increase for Bay Wheels stationless e-bike trips that will take effect September 22, 2021. Bikesharing systems have been an important contribution to the rise in popularity of bicycling in San Francisco over the past decade. Bikeshare programs lower barriers to bicycling by overcoming the challenges of owning, storing and securing one’s own vehicle. Shared bicycles also offer a solution for the "last mile" connections that allow for more effective travel by transit so that one can complete their so-called “last mile” to their destination by bicycle. The SFMTA regulates bikeshare service in order to provide equit able access to shared bicycles for all San Franciscans, as well as ensuring proper placement of stations or unstationed vehicles.  Before and throughout the pandemic, bicycling has increased, and our bik...

How Small Improvements Can Make a Big Difference

รูปภาพ
How Small Improvements Can Make a Big Difference By Julie Kirschbaum [excerpted from APTA Passenger Transport Magazine, where the  full article is available online ] San Francisco Transit Riders, a non-profit ridership advocacy group, has declared September “transit month” in the city where I live, work and raise my family. As the Director of Muni at the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), and for others across the country in my role, every month is transit month. Still, I must admit that even after working in public transit for more than 20 years, I’m still unabashedly enthusiastic about transit month and about the potential of our industry. When we do things right, we connect communities, improve people’s daily lives, combat climate change and open opportunities for the people who need them most. Because the SFMTA is an integrated transit and transportation agency, we are able to have our planners and engineers work together to design changes that redu...

September is Transit Month!

รูปภาพ
September is Transit Month!  By Guest Author Cat Carter San Francisco Transit Riders, an independent nonprofit advocating for the needs of public transportation customers, started Transit Month six years ago as a way to highlight the importance of public transit in San Francisco - for the city's livability, accessibility and sustainability. This event honors all the riders using Muni to travel in and around San Francisco, as well as all the Muni operators who get us there safely every day. We'll be celebrating the role of transit in the Bay Area's recovery with events, rides and prizes.  Daily Muni ridership never dipped below 100,000 during shelter-in-place-- that's a lot of people who depended on Muni to access essential jobs and services. Muni staff showed up every day, even in the face of the uncertainty of COVID-19, to make sure people could continue reaching their destinations. San Francisco wouldn't be able to exist or recover without all of the Muni sta...
